Sapling Yard: Wonderfully Diverse Wines
In a recent tasting, we had the opportunity to delve into the wines of Sapling Yard, a boutique winery that continues to craft wines with heart and precision. The line-up showcased the winemaking talent of Carla and Malcolm, with six wonderfully diverse bottles that highlight the unique characteristics of their regions and meticulous craftsmanship.
Carla’s journey began in her backyard shed in 2012, where she produced her first vintage using a basket press and borrowed equipment. The hard work quickly paid off with award-winning wines, and in 2019, alongside acclaimed winemaker Malcolm Burdett, production moved to the winery at Lake George. This shift allowed Sapling Yard to expand while preserving the exceptional quality they’ve become known for.
The wines reflect a blend of fruit from their Braidwood vineyard and carefully selected grapes from Tumbarumba, Murrumbateman, Hilltops, and Lake George. Here’s what we tasted:
Four Pinots 2023 (12.0% Alc.) – $29.95
A fascinating blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and a splash of Pinot Blanc. This wine straddles the line between orange and pink, with a dry, mouthwatering palate featuring pink grapefruit, red apple, and strawberry notes.
Versatile and elegant, this wine is perfect with light salads or seafood.
Fiori 2023 (11.5% Alc.) – $29.95
An aromatic field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Pinot Blanc. “Fiori,” meaning flowers, perfectly describes the delicate floral aromas intertwined with orchard fruits, lime zest, and a hint of ginger.
Pair this zesty, fresh wine with Southeast Asian-inspired dishes for a delightful experience.
Rosé Grenache/Gamay 2022 (11.5% Alc.) – $24.95
This modern Australian rosé, made from Grenache and Gamay, is fresh and lively with notes of red apple, cucumber, and raspberry. While fruity on the nose, the palate is dry with a long finish.
A wonderful companion to dumplings or a burrata and confit tomato salad.
Pinot Gamay 2023 (11.5% Alc.) – $32.95
From their Braidwood vineyard, this delicate wine was shaped by a tough season with cool temperatures. It boasts bright cherry and strawberry notes, herbaceous tones, and structured tannins.
Pair it with jamon, hard cheese, and fresh strawberries for a perfect match.
Gamay 2023 (13.0% Alc.) – $34.95
Sourced from Tumbarumba’s Moppity Vineyard, this light yet flavorful Gamay features aromas of redcurrant and violets, soft tannins, and a touch of toasty oak.
Enjoy it with aged Comté cheese or a charcuterie board.
Shiraz Viognier 2021 (13.2% Alc.) – $39.95
A classic blend of 3% Viognier with Shiraz, this wine was aged for 12 months in a mix of new and old French oak. White pepper, mulberry, cedar, and violet aromas lead into a silky, complex palate.
Pair it with rib-eye steak or slow-cooked lamb, or cellar it for 10+ years.
Sapling Yard continues to impress with their thoughtful approach to winemaking, crafting wines that are as diverse as they are enjoyable. Whether you’re drawn to their delicate Pinots or their bold Shiraz Viognier, these wines are a testament to the quality and creativity of this boutique producer.
