Quarry Hill: From Terraces to Table

Nestled in the rocky, terraced hillsides just outside Canberra, Quarry Hill is a vineyard with a story as layered as its geology. Established in 1999 by Professor Deane Terrell, the vineyard’s diverse soils of granite, quartz, limestone, and shale—combined with steep slopes and cool nights—create the perfect conditions for producing expressive, cool-climate wines.

The vineyard’s unique terroir is matched by thoughtful winemaking, with fruit delivered to some of the region’s top winemakers as well as reserved for Quarry Hill’s own label. From effusive sparklings to vibrant reds, the wines show a commitment to quality and character.

We recently had the chance to taste six wines from their range, each showcasing a different aspect of this boutique producer’s personality.

Five Rows Naturally Sparkling (13.5% Alc.) – $30.95

Winemaker: Alex McKay

This lively sparkling wine is crafted primarily from Savagnin with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc, using the Petillant Naturel method. Aromas of spicy green apple carry through to a full palate, where citrus and slate add complexity. It’s a natural sparkling that feels effortless but delivers plenty of intrigue.

Two Places Pinot Gris (11.8% Alc.) – $25.95

Winemaker: Alex McKay

Sourced from Hilltops, this Pinot Gris leans into clean, crisp fruit expressions. White peach, pear, and red apple shine on the nose and palate, balanced by a touch of acidity that keeps it fresh and vibrant. A wine that’s generous yet approachable.

First Light Rosé (11.7% Alc.) – $25.95

Winemaker: Alex McKay

A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mataro, this bright and aromatic rosé offers notes of apple blossom, white peach, and citrus. It’s fresh and textured, with balanced acidity providing a clean, crisp finish. A perfect option for long lunches or light summer fare.

West Block SGM 2017 (12.9% Alc.) – $39.95

Winemaker: Alex McKay

Intended as a GSM but pivoted to a Shiraz-dominant blend, this wine finds harmony in its components. Shiraz adds dark fruit and spice, Grenache brings cherry-like sweetness, and Mourvèdre provides a backbone of fragrance and savoury notes. The result is a light yet structured red that’s versatile and satisfying.

Hidden Ember Tempranillo 2021 (12.8% Alc.) – $43.95

Winemakers: Alex McKay and Lenore Sarandon

A standout newcomer, this estate-grown Tempranillo is vibrant and textured. Red liquorice, dark cherry, and warm spice unfold on the nose and palate, supported by fleshy tannins that give it serious depth. A strong contender for one of the region’s best Tempranillos.

Sea of Stones Sparkling Shiraz 2015 (13.8% Alc.) – $43.95

This sparkling Shiraz showcases the exceptional 2015 vintage. Aged five years on lees, it presents bright aromas of spice, red fruit, and dark berries. The palate is rich yet refined, with flavours of blackcurrant, plum, and mulberry supported by silky tannins and a dry, lingering finish. A restrained dosage allows the base wine’s quality to shine through.

Quarry Hill’s wines are as distinctive as the terraced vineyard they hail from, offering a mix of tradition, innovation, and personality. From the lively effervescence of their sparklings to the structured depth of their reds, this tasting reminded us why the Canberra District continues to be such an exciting region for wine lovers.
