Helm Wines: A Legacy of Riesling and Cabernet Excellence

Nestled in the heart of Murrumbateman, NSW, Helm Wines has been a cornerstone of the Canberra District wine scene since 1973. Founded by Ken and Judith Helm, the winery has a long history of producing award-winning Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ken Helm’s roots run deep—he's a descendant of German vignerons who planted vines in the Albury district in the 1850s. Helm Wines remains focused on the distinct expression of these two varieties, sourced from vineyards across Canberra, Tumbarumba, Orange, and Mudgee.

Despite a devastating frost in October that nearly wiped out the Murrumbateman vineyards, Ken managed to put together another excellent 2024 lineup, proving once again the resilience and quality of Helm Rieslings. With the help of Cameron from Ergo Wines, we tasted six exceptional wines:

Tumbarumba Riesling 2024 – $31.95

Fresh apple blossom aromas lead the way, followed by crisp notes of granny smith apple and lemon zest. The refreshing acidity and clean finish make this a delightful, terroir-driven Riesling that captures the unique character of the Tumbarumba region.

Classic Dry Riesling 2024 – $36.95

Sourced from fruit grown in Orange and Mudgee, this Riesling boasts powerful citrus blossom aromas. On the palate, expect crunchy green apples, a strong minerality, and lime cordial, balanced by intense citrus-like acidity. It finishes long and refreshing—classic Helm style.

Half Dry Riesling 2024 – $31.95

Bright and light green in color, this halbtrocken style Riesling offers lime and lemon citrus aromas with a juicy, soft, and fruity palate. It’s a great introduction to the half-dry Riesling style, perfect for those who prefer a touch of sweetness balanced with acidity.

Riesling Rosé 2024 – $31.95

A unique blend of 95+% Riesling pressings and a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon free-run juice, giving it color and added texture. This Riesling Rosé stands out for its freshness and delicate fruit profile with a hint of depth from the Cabernet.

Classic Cabernet 2021 – $46.95

Rich berry and spice on the nose lead into a palate of dark fruits and sweet oak. Aged for over two years in French oak, this Cabernet has a bright color, soft tannins, and a long, flavorful finish that highlights the classic Cabernet profile from the Canberra District.

Premium Cabernet 2021 – $85.95

The deep red hue of this wine is striking, with a rich berry and spicy bouquet. This Cabernet is all about balance—soft tannins, rich dark fruits, and a beautifully integrated oak structure. An outstanding wine that is sure to age gracefully.

All the wines exceeded expectations, with the Cabernets standing out as the stars of the tasting. Despite the challenging conditions, Helm Wines continues to deliver wines that are both elegant and distinctive.
