Dog Trap Vineyard: Cool Climate Reds with Character

For nearly two decades, Dog Trap Vineyard has been quietly producing some fine Canberra District fred wines. Situated near Yass, this boutique vineyard is owned and operated by Dennis Hart and Julie White, who do everything themselves—from growing the grapes to bottling the finished wines. Their focus on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon has yielded consistently high-quality wines that are both affordable and enjoyable.

We had the opportunity to taste a range of their wines, offering a snapshot of different vintages and the cool climate style that defines Dog Trap:

Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 – $23.95

A cool year yielded a gentle, yet ripe Cabernet. The black cherry flavor profile is true to the varietal, with a good, grippy yet gentle finish. Although the wine is lighter than most Cabernets, its balance and clean finish make it a perfect cool climate representation.

Shiraz 2016 / 2017 / 2018 – $23.95

We tasted three vintages of Shiraz, all made in the same way from the same fruit, offering a fascinating comparison. These cool climate Shiraz wines are defined by red fruits, spice, and silky finishes. The intensity and flavor varied across vintages, with 2016 being the most generous, followed by 2017, and 2018 being the most restrained. Currently stocking the 2016 vintage.

Entente 2018 – $23.95

An amicable blend of 85% Cabernet and 15% Shiraz, this wine offers fleshy red fruits, spice, and a good, grippy finish. The two varietals work in harmony to create a balanced, approachable wine that’s perfect for everyday drinking.

Mulled Wine Kit – $23.95

An all-time winter warmer! This kit includes everything you need—wine, a sachet of fresh ingredients, and a simple recipe for success. It’s the perfect way to bring a little warmth to those cold Canberra nights.

Dog Trap’s range is all about delivering quality wines at a reasonable price, and they most certainly achieve that. Whether you’re looking for a lighter-style Cabernet or a Shiraz with silky texture, these wines are great value for the quality they offer.

Stay tuned for more tastings and discoveries as we continue exploring the best wines from our region. Cheers!
